Bill Belichick took out a full page advert in Sunday’s edition of the Boston Globe to send a heartfelt message to Patriots fans after saying farewell to New England last month.

The 71-year-old and the Patriots mutually parted ways in January after 24 seasons together. He was replaced as head coach by Jerod Mayo.

Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady won six Super Bowl rings over an 18-season span together in what many consider the greatest dynasty in NFL history.

But Belichick’s reputation took a big hit after Brady left the Patriots following the 2019 season – and immediately won his seventh Super Bowl ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Patriots have had only one winning season since then – a one-and-done playoff appearance in 2021 – while posting a record of 29-38, which led the franchise to move on from their long-term coach.

In his farewell press conference last month, Belichick made his affection for Patriots fans clear. Now he’s sent them a heartfelt message in the Boston Globe, taking out a full page ad to send a farewell message.

It was addressed to ‘Patriots fans everywhere’ and was topped by a picture of him at one of their Super Bowl parades in Boston.

He wrote: Livejasmin ‘Nowhere in America are pro sports fans as passionate as in New England and for 24 years, I was blessed to feel your passion and power.

‘The Patriots are the only NFL team representing SIX states but in reality, Patriots Nation knows no borders.

‘You were undaunted by weather, attended scorching hot training camp practices and braved Foxborough’s coldest, wettest, snowiest and windiest days.

‘Your thoughtful letters offered support, critique, and creative play suggestions. You watched on TV, the internet, and from your stadium seats.

‘You traveled from coast to coast and internationally. Numerous times, you overtook opposing stadiums and were the last fans standing. We loved it! You gave your precious time, resources, and energy to our team. We appreciated it!

‘Six times, you packed Boston by the millions for parades that were truly a two-way expression of gratitude and love. The images from those days are burned in my memory.

‘You may even have enjoyed my fashion sense and press conferences, or maybe you just tolerated them. I loved coaching here and, together, we experienced some amazing moments.’

Belichick finished by writing in capital letters ‘THANK YOU ALL’ before signing it and finishing with ‘respect and admiration’.

Belichick won’t be on the sideline at the start of next season after being overlooked during the NFL’s coaching carousel this offseason.

The last opening was filled Thursday when Washington turned to Dan Quinn, whose team blew a 28-3 lead against Belichick seven years ago as Brady led the Patriots to a 34-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in the greatest Super Bowl comeback in league history.

Belichick interviewed twice with Atlanta after parting from the Patriots but the Falcons hired Raheem Morris, who is 21-38 as a head coach.

One theory why Belichick didn’t get hired is that he still wants full control over personnel decisions like Patriots owner Robert Kraft gave him in New England after he won his third Super Bowl.

Belichick said in his departure from the Patriots that he was open to a more traditional front-office structure in which a general manager had final say.

But a person informed of Belichick’s discussions with the Falcons told the Associated Press he still wanted full control. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the conversations were private.

Another knock against Belichick is his losing record without Brady.

The Patriots were 28-39 over the past four seasons after Brady went to Tampa Bay, won a Super Bowl and eventually retired. Overall, Belichick is 84-103 with only one playoff win without Brady over 29 seasons, including five in Cleveland.

Belichick will turn 72 in April so his age coupled with the notion that he could retire after getting 15 more wins to break Shula’s career record may have contributed to the lack of interest from teams.

Sixty-year-old Jim Harbaugh was the oldest of the new head coaches hired. Quinn is 53. The other new coaches are between 36 and 45.

Other high-profile coaches who were passed over include 72-year-old Pete Carroll, a Super Bowl winner, and Mike Vrabel, the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year.
